Although a number of investigations can be conducted at the clinic providing prompt answers , some complex medical investigations may need to be conducted at Royal Manchester Children’s Hospital. Here I list a few of the investigations that I judiciously undertake to reach a diagnosis.
Chest X Ray
Baseline bloods, allergy and immunity investigations
Basic lung function testing (Spirometry)
Chest CT scan
Exercise challenge tests, reversibility assessments (bronchodilator responsiveness), Lung volumes, Transfer factor)
Exhaled Nitric Oxide (FeNO)
Sweat test (for diagnosing Cystic Fibrosis) and CF Gene analysis
Flexible fibreoptic bronchoscopy and bronchoalveolar lavage, dynamic airway assessments and airway brushings
Complex CT Scan of chest and CT angiogram
pH study and impedance study for gastroesophageal reflux
Sleep studies – oximetry and more complex polysomnography
Nasal ciliary brushings and nasal nitric oxide (for primary ciliary dyskinesia)
Speech and language assessments for swallowing issues (Videoflouroscopy)
